We turn clay to make vessel, but it is on the space where there is nothing that the usefulness of the vessel depends. We piece doors and windows to make a house; And it is on these spaces where there is nothing that the usefulness of the house depends. Therefore just as we take advantage of what is, we should recognize what is not. Dao De Jing, a fourth century BCE of Laozi, (Waley,1958).

In 2015 I was selected for an artist in residency program at Shangyuan Art Museum in Beijing China.

Here I wanted to investigate present Chinese ceramic spaces as layers of telling from the dynasties, the culture revolution and present. My focus HAS been on the Chinese tradition of architecture, ceramic and wooden furniture for which China is world famous.

The Shangyuan Art Musem is placed in Huairou District in Shayoukou Village. It is in the countryside more than 2 hours with bus from Beijing Center and close to the mountains and Mongolian border.

Here I met a Chinese farmer and village culture very close to the earth, the fruit and vegetables they grow, the cheeps and chickens they raise and their family complexes behind tall enclosing walls. The earth is represented in the bricks and the wood, that make the frames for the villagers life’s being stacked in bundles all over for later use or reuse. These ever changing accumulations of materials is not as a part of an overall design-program. their beautiful colors, textures materiality, and combinatorics patterns is just based on pure functional approach.  It is from this landscape of present ceramic and wood culture, mixed with the fascination of the pasts Chinese tradition of the architectural ground plan,  wooden interior window frames and furniture that the projects

take its starting point. It is with the admiration for the Chinese tradition of craft and art, as well as with the curiosity of knowing more about China today, that these art works are unfolded.

The space I investigate  is the physical one based on materials, light and sound, but also the  non physical space, the  perception of atmospheres.

At Shangyuan Art Musaeum I was happy to meet the Korean Art Photographer Seungjae Lee, the Chinese painter and performer Ma Xin and the Chinese composer Lin Wang.

They are all a part of this project and this exhibition, contributing not only with specific works as for Seungjae, as videorecorder for the video and taking many of the photos for the home installations, , Ma Xin as performer in the video, they have also been a very important support and good friends all through the residency program.

The idea of entropy comes from a principle of thermodynamics

dealing with energy. It usually refers to the idea that everything in the universe eventually moves from order to disorder, and entropy is the measurement of that change.
