LiChuang
Timeis an inescapable part of human existence. We count it, we loose it, we try to save it. We measure it in terms from geologic time, toseasonal time to milliseconds. It rulesour waking moments. Then there is dreamtime.
TheGap Between Things
Thepaintings of Li Chuang operate at the intersection of real time and dreamtime. There is a verisimilitude to theobjects he paints: rocks, a chair, a branch, but not an exactitude. The rocks are round, and the branches curveonly slightly. They are lovinglypainted. And like a dream remembered,they exist in a bleached ether – a horizon line or a corner onlysuggested. In the painting “Everyone Has a Bowl in Life”, a group ofnested earthenware bowls, each with a distinct color glaze that would makeMartha Stewart proud, don’t appear touch but rather seem to pulsate with theirown energy. Round rocks castingindividual shadows hover on a round canvas. These objects have life.
Paintingmundane objects as proxy for complex concepts has a very long tradition inWestern art history. Li Chuang’spaintings follow this heritage. A 17thcentury Dutch floral painting speaks to the fragility of life; and a cubistguitar by Picasso speaks of the possibility of multiple view points at the samemoment. As Georgio Morandi endowednondescript items with a sense of the eternal, so to Chuang endows the simpleforms he chooses to paint with a quiet and a sense of unease. They bear the trace of their own history,mottled and pitted, and sit with an aura of defiant isolation.
Viewersto an exhibition often wonder about the source material, or source ofinspiration for the artist. Li Chuangdoes not disappoint. Though many of theimages spring from his own dreams, many objects that appear in his works arealso present at the gallery. Here in thegallery setting they too exist in a dream state. Round river rocks float, a small batteredchair pirouettes on one leg and a branch is several species spliced togetherwith surgical tape and laid upon an unprimed canvas. Li has given full expression to that quietand a vague unease that surrounds that transition from dream to waking.

在李创大大小小、方方圆圆的作品前站定，一种跨越年龄的敬意由心而生。从这些画面里我看到了诗人的气质，思想的闪烁。李创对物背后的故事有着宗教般的注释，所有的作品都呈现出人类长远历史的痕迹。就他23 岁这个年龄，似乎是神派驻到上苑艺术馆里来的小智者。
一个好的艺术家你不仅看他作品呈现了什么，你还要看他对艺术的态度，是否是真实面对自己的内心，深入地挖掘，适时呈现上。还要观察他是否把时间和心思都用在观察生活、认真思考问题、创作试验上。李创就有这样的品质，这是成就一个优秀艺术家的先决条件。在当今艺术界如此喧哗的年代里，人们拼命想找到艺术形式的突破，结合一种什么观念来证明自己作品的牛B。却还有这么一个90后青年艺术家在这里安静地思考，还在被很多赶朝的艺术人唾弃的平面画布上平实、认真地创作，你不得不对他肃然起敬。
李创的画每一幅都意味深长，耐人寻味。今年上半年我们举行的“上苑微景致作品群展”中他有两幅关于树的小画参展，一幅是站立的树、一幅是倒下的树（目前已被收藏家买走）。当时展示在图书馆里，我们的驻馆诗人每天在这两幅画下阅读与写作，其中诗人米罗斯拉夫•柯林（Miroslav Kirin 克罗地亚）对我说，在这样的作品下写作让他的文字变的绵长，思绪飞得更远古。的确如此，诗人的敏感与李创的画同步。

源于伤痛（看李创作品有感） / 田也
在这个娱乐至上思想匮乏的年月里，李创的画毫不戏谑，以他独特的视角折射出他对人、事、物思考的维度。嘶鸣的大象知觉自己悲剧的命运；弓箭紧绷出爱情焦灼的部分；一个个饱含岁月的粗砺之碗；石头炮弹凝固在击碎我的瞬间。
在一种隐隐的只属于他的世界里，如果我触碰的用力了一些，便击碎了自己内心里那片无名的伤。李创笔下的事物无声地躺在画布上，安宁、消极，一片纸屑、一枝干木，与世无争的在世界的每个角落里存活，恍若隔世。
我离开并听到了声音
I walked away and heard the sound
我心跳的声音
The sound of my own heartbeat
我的心正孤独地跳动着
My Heart is beating all alone
我发现
I found out
转身而去是多么容易
It’s easier to look away
我伸出我空空的手
I held out my empty hand
我抚摸这温柔的风

每个人都带着特殊的、各自不同的伤痛，或隐或显。让•热内写道，美，只源于伤痛。
